McKenzie joined Higher Learning Advocates to combine her love for communications and writing with her passion for equity and access in higher education. As Communications Manager, she is responsible for HLA’s communications efforts, including the publication of Insights & Outlooks, the dissemination of policy briefs and materials, and social media management.
Previously, McKenzie worked as a Program Associate at the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program, where she managed a three-state project focused on improving outcomes for community college transfer students, worked with a group of university administrators and presidents to improve access to higher education for lower-income students, and supported communications efforts and strategy. Prior to her time at The Aspen Institute, McKenzie worked on the communications team at Atlantic Media in Washington, D.C.
McKenzie received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University, where she also double majored in European history. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public policy at Georgetown University.
Originally from Lexington, K.Y., McKenzie has called the D.C. area home for over three years. In her free time, she competes in powerlifting, so you can almost always find her at the gym, or listening to one of her many favorite podcasts. She can be found at @mckenziemmaxson.
