Higher Learning Advocates’ Statement on Racial Injustice

Higher Learning Advocates stands with Black Americans in the wake of the wrongful killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, among too many others. These are neither new problems nor a new reality for Black communities across the country, including our nation’s postsecondary students.

There are long standing inequalities across many systems, and these protests and this movement are about the systematic racism against the Black community for generations. Higher education is not exempt from these unjust inequities.

As part of the higher education advocacy community, we remain dedicated to addressing the overall systemic inequities in our postsecondary system, but we can do more as it relates to elevating the needs of today’s Black students who are disproportionately impacted. We will only achieve our mission when systemic inequities no longer prohibit student success.

It’s time to directly and actively address the issues of racism and racial inequities head on. We look forward to actively being a part of the solution.
